“Achalugo, I'm Going to Marry You!” — What Can We Deduce From This Nollywood Blockbuster?
So guys, this Nollywood movie “Love In Every Word” has been trending online for some days now.
It was produced by Omoni Oboli, a prominent Nollywood figure and was written by Mfon-Abasi Micheal Inyang. Its release on the 7th of March, 2025 caused a buzz on the internet as it was able to garner a jaw-dropping 4.3 million views within just 72 hours, with viewers taking to various social media handles to air their views on this spectacular work of art.
This amazing screen performance sees former Big Brother Naija star Bamike ‘Bam Bam’ Olawunmi-Adenibuyan and renowned Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe play the roles of Chioma and Odogwu respectively, as it ultimately seeks to tell a story of how two people from different worlds meet by chance. As they feel a connection, they must deal with their fears and the fact that they have different perspectives on life. Throughout the movie, they struggle to balance their desire for love with the need to stay true to themselves.
By taking an in-depth look at the various characters in the movie, subsequent paragraphs of this blog post will highlight some real-life lessons and applications I was able to deduce.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
Chioma
Chioma is a hard-working and independent young lady. She is not after the money of those she is in a relationship with. She is even the one who sponsors and takes care of boyfriends she dated in the past. She has a stable job and a side hustle from which she takes good care of herself and live comfortably. Sadly, this is in contrast to what we see from many young ladies in our world today. Many are always concerned with receiving rather than contributing financially to their relationships.
She portrays the importance of the ability of a lady to fend for herself to a great extent, rather than being solely dependent on her partner for her every single need. Her character shows that there's class and glamour in hard work on the part of the female gender.
Odogwu
He is a wealthy and principled man who knows what he wants and didn't waste any time in making a go at it. Therefore as a guy, when you find the one with whom your soul is glued to, don't beat around the bush before declaring your intentions. Let her know what you want; that she means a lot to you and you can't afford to lose her to another. It makes her feel more valued and that she has a place in your long-term goals.
His character shows that even though love is important in a relationship, it is also pertinent that a man is financially stable to a reasonable extent before seeking to bring another sailor on his boat.
He is a good listener. When they have conversations, he is eager to know more about her and listens attentively as she talks. He understands that women love to be heard, and he gives her that opportunity. Even when she began ghosting him, he pesters to find out why and is patient about it.
He stands up for her when she is afraid that it could cost her job. Chioma faces labor exploitation in her workplace but isn't able to speak up or focus more on her perfume brand because she believes that the money she gets from her 9-5 job is a stable income, and she doesn’t want to jeopardize it. But Odogwu always insists that she pays more attention to her own business rather than someone else's. He even angrily confronts her boss over the phone for calling at an ungodly hour.
These actions give Chioma the confidence to stand up for her rights at her workplace. As a guy, you must be able to stand up for and protect the one you love. Ladies are emotional beings and may not be able to tackle certain challenges. They may know what to do, but may not have the emotional vigor to do so. When this happens, you must be able to speak for them and not cower. In essence, Odogwu was a shield, a protector and a defender to the one he loves. His actions made her see that she deserves more and that her efforts need to be appreciated in a nontoxic setting.
Another exceptional quality of Odogwu that every young man must adopt is being able to prepare sumptuous meals. Yes, Odogwu is a good cook! Over time in Africa, the role of cooking has been reserved for the female gender. The kitchen is termed the “woman's office.” Unfortunately, that is a terrible conception and idea. Both genders should be able to do justice in the kitchen. It's not something a woman MUST always do. One way to treat your woman right as a guy is by doing the dishes in the kitchen and letting her rest after the day's strenuous activity. It's a sign that you care about her well-being.
"My being angry with you doesn't mean I have to mean to you.” Odogwu made this statement when Chioma sought to know why he was still nice to her even when she began ghosting him. Nobody who claims to love you would intentionally hurt you. It's okay to be annoyed at your partner sometimes, but it doesn't give you the ground to say or do hurtful things.
Lastly, he desires something substantial, not a relationship that would be based on just sex and pleasure. He maintains that the right time for that would come. But in the meantime, getting to know each other better should come first. I’m of the opinion that young people in relationships or those who would be in the near future should learn this.
Ifeoma and Ivie
Chioma has two good and supportive friends, not jealous ones. They want the best for her and are there to support/advise her even when she is making the wrong choice. They stand up and fight for her. We see that in an instance where Ifeoma, who is a lawyer, helps Chioma file a lawsuit against her ex who had squandered her money and left her shattered.
They also open her eyes to see that Odogwu is the right man for her even when she is delusional about her “spec.” They did not go behind her to try and steal Odogwu after confirming how wealthy he is. This brings us to the importance of having true friends, not a multitude of gold diggers and wolves in sheep's clothing. The pertinent place of having a strong network of true and loyal people who can stand by you when the going gets tough cannot be overemphasized.
To wrap it up, I must say that the movie provides entertainment, valuable lessons and insights into relationships for viewers. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a thought-provoking screenplay. Kudos to every member of the crew for bringing such a spectacle to our screens.
